In 1993, the World Bank created the Inspection Panel, the first accountability mechanism housed at a multilateral development bank. The Inspection Panel gives a voice to communities concerned about adverse effects of World Bank-funded projects and promotes accountability through its independent fact-finding missions.
During this event, co-hosted by the Center for Global Development and the World Bank, experts will reflect on the Inspection Panel’s impact over the last three decades, drawing upon the experience and learnings of inspection cases. The panelists will also share the findings of a new report on livelihoods focusing on restoration measures resulting from involuntary resettlement.
Among the questions to be explored at this event are: How has the Panel influenced redress for communities, World Bank institutional learning and policies, and changes in capacity and measures among borrower governments? How can the Panel inform improved handling of risks to livelihoods in future World Bank operations? Will the Panel still be fit for purpose considering the anticipated expansion of the World Bank’s role under the Evolution Roadmap?
