One of the biggest constraints to the green transition in Europe is the lack of qualified workers. Demographic trends and challenges in vocational training mean that domestic workforces will not be able to meet workforce needs: in Germany, a shortfall of over 550,000 workers is projected. The European Employment Services report that across the EU, countries are facing shortages of welders, electricians, and construction workers: the people they need to make their targets a reality.

Without these workers, the green transition simply won’t happen.

Many countries are therefore turning to labour migration as a complement to industrial policy, and new initiatives are underway, in the EU and around the world, at both the programme and the policy level.

During this event, experts from Fragomen, the Center for Global Development, government, and industry will address key questions, including: Where is the greatest demand for workers and what types of project are they needed for? How have governments and industry in Europe been responding to skills shortages? What challenges have these initiatives faced? What can be learnt from projects that have already linked training and migration?

This event has been selected as part of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) and London Climate Action Week (LCAW).
