Using Development to Prevent Violent Conflict: New Approaches from USAID

CGD hosted Elisabeth Kvitashvili, Director, Office of Conflict Management and Mitigation, U.S. Agency for International Development for a seminar entitled "Using Development to Prevent Violent Conflict: New Approaches from USAID." The event was moderated by Stewart Patrick, Research Fellow, Center for Global Development.

USAID operates in dozens of conflict-prone and post-conflict environments around the world, where traditional approaches to development can unwittingly exacerbate social tensions. The Office of Conflict Management and Mitigation (CMM), created in 2002, seeks to mainstream conflict prevention into USAID’s activities -- so that country programs address the root causes of social tension and state fragility. Recent CMM initiatives include the introduction of conflict assessments, early warning mechanisms, and sector-specific tool-kits (e.g., for natural resources, youth, and land).
