OPENING REMARKS

This event will be hosted in-person at CGD's DC office: 2055 L St NW, 5th floor, Washington, DC 20036

The last 100 years brought about one of the greatest stories of progress of our time: the doubling of average human life expectancy across the planet. But the COVID-19 pandemic proved a devastating setback, taking the lives of millions, weakening health systems around the world, leading to the first decline in global life expectancy in decades. To resume progress, we need to change the trajectory of global health by sustainably managing COVID-19, helping build countries’ capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to disease outbreaks; and investing in the people who form the backbone of our health systems: primary health care workers.

CGD is pleased to welcome USAID Administrator Samantha Power for an important address on the future of global health and moving forward from COVID-19. Following her remarks, Administrator Power will be joined in conversation with USAID Assistant Administrator Atul Gawande, moderated by CGD Executive Vice President Amanda Glassman. Time for audience questions is included.
