The US spent $937 billion on hospitals in 2013, about one-third of the $2.9 trillion spend on health care. As hospitals are a central component of the healthcare system, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is incentivizing hospitals to improve hospital care through quality measurement, public reporting, and value-based purchasing initiatives. This presentation will provide an overview of these efforts to reform the delivery system and drive quality improvement, and conclude with a discussion about applications to low- and middle-income countries.
