On February 23rd CGD hosted a discussion of Benin’s recently signed compact with the U.S. flagship development aid program, the Millennium Challenge Corp. (MCC). John Danilovich, head of MCC, and Cosme Sehlin, Benin’s Minister of Finance, provided opening remarks. CGD Senior Fellow Steve Radelet then moderated a discussion with Simon Pierre Adovelande, National Coordinator for MCA Benin, and Michael Grossman, Senior Country Director at the MCC. Highlights of the meeting included discussions surrounding Benin’s successful country-wide participatory process in developing the country’s compact. The $307 million grant is the MCC’s largest to date, and will focus on four key areas: port rehabilitation, access to land, financial services, and access to justice.
