The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports the retirement of Mark Kane from PATH, the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health.
It was late 1998 that Kane and a dozen-plus other experts in immunization were invited to Bill and Melinda Gates' home for a dinner of lamb chops and squash soup. Two months earlier, the Gateses had stunned the international public health community by pledging $100 million to create a new initiative aimed at expanding childhood vaccinations worldwide. Kane was recruited by PATH, which administers many of the Gates Foundation's global health initiatives, to run the project, the Children's Vaccine Program.
