Still No Money for Developing Nations, New G-20 Documents Show (NewYorkTimes.com and ClimateWire)

September 14, 2009

ClimateWire and NYT.com quoted CGD president Nancy Birdsall's speech ahead of the G20 Summit.

From the article:

"Nancy Birdsall, president of the Center for Global Development, said some of the disconnect between the work nations are doing to explore financing options and the vague platitudes that make it into public statements reflects tensions between rich and poor nations.

"In particular, China and India don't want to have a lot of discussion about the money and transfers until countries, particularly the United States, make a commitment on mitigation," she said. At the same time, Birdsall said, the issue in her opinion has been wrongly defined as wealthy countries raising money for poorer ones. In reality, she argued, much of what G-20 nations can help bring about is inexpensive -- like helping nations figure out how to measure and verify emissions cuts."
