The New FCDO Health System Strengthening Position Paper – Too Good to be True? Three Recommendations to Ensure Impact

We congratulate the FCDO on the landmark paper on Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) and offer three recommendations for implementation: 1) further clarify strategic priorities, for example by articulating a poverty focus and prioritising partnership with low-and middle-income governments; 2) place greater emphasis on joined-up approaches to avoid fragmenting health systems; and 3) set up a monitoring framework to ensure impact.

#UHCDay 2021: Elevating Health Financing as the Cornerstone of Universal Health Coverage

To mark this year’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day on December 12, we’ve brought together recent work from CGD’s global health policy team to advance #HealthForAll through an elevated financing agenda. The new Omicron variant of COVID-19  may be more transmissible and more capable of evading vaccines than older variants due to its high number of mutations. There is a real concern that it could spread rapidly throughout the world and lead to another wave  of critically ill patients in low-and middle income countries (LMICs), where vaccine coverage remains low.

Before Recommending the RTS,S Malaria Vaccine for Wider Use, WHO Should Address Three Key Considerations

Last month, the world woke up to promising news on malaria prevention: administering an existing malaria vaccine (RTS,S) in addition to antimalarial drugs before the rainy season reduced child hospitalizations and deaths by approximately 70 percent in Burkina Faso and Mali. These results arrived ahead of a forthcoming decision from the World Health Organization on whether to recommend RTS,S for broader use. This blog argues that WHO should consider value for money and address three key considerations before making their reccomendation.

DIBs: Value for Money or Just an Interesting Financing Mechanism?

At the end of 2018, the world had seven development impact bonds (DIBs) and more in the pipeline. Yet questions remain about the potential of DIBs—still a new financing instrument—compared to other pay-for-performance arrangements. With a dearth of standard and transparent evaluation methods, it is difficult to reliably assess whether DIBs are good value for money, and if they are, how best to structure them to maximize their efficiency.
