Global Fund Board Launches Round 6!

The Board of the Global Fund, meeting in Geneva, approved a sixth round of funding today. Proposals will be due on August 3, and the Board will vote to approve proposals in November. The Board called upon donor nations to increase funding so that the round is fully funded by November.

This is a very positive step for the Global Fund, and for all of the countries hoping to build off of successful programs.

World Bank and Global Health: Do Better, Not Less

Anybody with a serious illness would rather see a doctor than a banker. So why does the World Bank still think it knows best about how to eradicate disease in the Third World? Its expertise lies in lending money for big infrastructure projects, not in public health - nor in lending money for public health.

Centralized Procurement for the Global Fund?

One of the biggest challenges for Global Fund grants is procurement. Countries are receiving very large grants and required to quickly procure drugs, reagents and equipment in order to get their programs running. When they hit procurement delays, the entire grant falls behind. This week the Fund considers moving towards centralized procurement.

A Global Fund Round 6 in '06?

The Global Fund Board will decide this week if it will launch a sixth round of funding this year. Round 5 was officially approved by the Board meeting in September 2005. If announced at this Board meeting, the Round could be approved this fall when the Board meets in Mexico.

So the former President's recent endorsement of mandatory HIV testing and even compulsory disclosure in high prevalence countries has, without a doubt, fuelled the ongoing debate about mandatory vs. opt-out testing. Global Fund Launches New Web Information

The Global Fund just launched new country information pages on its website. Just go to the Search Center and select a country. The new information includes more detailed grant information, news stories, health statistics, etc. You can also register for alerts to receive emails on specific countries or regions. The main search page allows you to create your own reports, find contacts at the Secretariat or on CCMs, and locate documents.

Global Fund Board Meeting Overview

The thirteenth Board Meeting of the Global Fund kicks off with briefings tomorrow, and the formal meeting will be held this Thursday and Friday. The agenda is packed with important decisions, summarized below. CGD will post more detailed blogs on the major topics over this week.
