Center for Global Development and International Center for Research on Women co-hosted "Too Young to Wed: Childhood Marriage and Its Implications for Development," featuring Mahdere Paulos, Executive Director, Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association and Molly Melching, Executive Director, Tostan, Senegal. Paulos and Melching examined broad trends in the practice of child marriage, what community organizations in Ethiopia and Senegal are doing to address the problem, and the implications for U.S. foreign assistance. Anju Malhotra, Group Director, Social & Economic Development, ICRW, and Marlaine Lockheed, Visiting Fellow, Center for Global Development, discussed how child marriage robs girls of their ability to reach their full potential, deprives them of education and meaningful work, and threatens them with illness, disease and even death. Geeta Rao Gupta, President, ICRW, acted as the moderator.
