The excitement and controversy in the run-up to this year's World Cup in Brazil offers an apt opportunity to reflect on the wider links between soccer, national economies, and even history. The Center for Global Development is pleased to invite you to join us to hear Joshua Nadel, a history professor at North Carolina Central University, talk about how soccer has shaped Latin American national identities and development. Josh will explain how what started as a simple game now plays an outsized role in the region, drawing from his new book Fútbol!: Why Soccer Matters in Latin America. After Josh speaks, Andrés Martinez of the New America Foundation and CGD's Charles Kenny will provide comments.

As we prepare to root for our teams next month, we hope you'll be able to join us for this event. RSVP to events@cgdev.org
