ABOUT THE EVENT

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Jeff Sachs will summarize the likely impact of the pandemic on attaining the SDGs, drawing on his June 2020 Sustainable Development Report and subsequent work. He will also engage in a discussion of the important role of the IMF in helping to put achievement of the SDGs back on track—including through enhancements of the institution’s work on climate change and by better collaboration with the World Bank and others in the UN system.

Following Sachs’s keynote remarks, Mark Plant will focus on the IMF’s role in meeting SDG13 (climate action) and related environmental goals. He will make the case for climate change being squarely in the IMF’s mandate, discuss how the IMF can be helped to succeed in its efforts in this area, and how the IMF can in turn help its member countries confront the challenges of climate change.
