CGD is delighted to announce that Nancy Birdsall, our founding president, will deliver the 2016 Richard Sabot Memorial Lecture, entitled ‘New Development Realities in a changing Global Order’. Birdsall will step down at the end of the year and this will be her last public event as CGD president.

The same globalization that has brought benefits to millions of people in the developing world is seen as not working for many in advanced economies. Yet, despite today’s turbulent politics, globalization is unlikely to be going away. The question for politicians as well as for development economists is how do we make globalization work for people everywhere? What new development realities should shape our approach to that question?

The Richard Sabot Memorial Lecture is held annually to honor the life and work of Richard “Dick” Sabot, a celebrated development economist and social impact investor, and a founding member of CGD’s Board, whose work and support helped shape our vision of independent research and new ideas to improve development policy and practice.

Richard Sabot’s son Oliver will give opening remarks and following the lecture light refreshments will be served.
