Seventy-five years after its inception, the multilateral development system is under stress and challenged as never before. At the threshold of the “decade of action” (2020-2030), the multilateral development system has hardly ever been so solicited, with a highly ambitious global development agenda, and a simultaneous need to cope with the impact of global challenges – such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic – that could undo years of hard-won development progress.
This year’s edition of the OECD’s Multilateral Development Finance Report (MDFR) makes the case that “building back better” also means improving the existing multilateral aid architecture. The report illustrates how efforts to respond to changing development needs over the last decades have led to the creation of a complex and fragmented system. We are faced with pressing questions: How can the multilateral system respond to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the consequences of a global recession? What funding constraints and vulnerabilities are there in the current multilateral system? How should shareholders and funders respond to the current financial constraints and demands on the multilateral system?
This joint event, co-hosted by the Center for Global Development and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is part of a virtual series “Multilateral development finance in the COVID-19 era and beyond – perspectives from around the world” which is scheduled around the launch of the OECD’s 2020 Multilateral Development Finance Report. The objective of this series is to offer a platform for open dialogue and global collective thinking. The events take place in different regions of the world, bringing a variety of perspectives and expectations on the role and future of multilateral development finance.
