Making the Case for U.S. International Family Planning Assistance

The United States should renew its political and financial commitment to global family planning programs, say five former U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) directors in Making the Case for U.S. International Family Planning Assistance. The authors recommend that USAID double its budget for international family planning to 1.2 billion in the next two years, and triple it by 2015, in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of universal access to reproductive health services. Three of the authors—former directors of USAID’s Office of Population and Reproductive Health—will speak at the Wilson Center launch.

Duff Gillespie will present the report and its key data on fertility rates and dollar allocations. Steven Sinding and Joseph Speidel will discuss population growth’s links to poverty and the environment, respectively. Finally, Ruth Levine of the Center for Global Development will comment on the report and place family planning and population issues within the broader development context.
