On this International Women’s Day, we are focusing on strategies to help adolescent girls achieve their potential. This is a challenge that needs attention: more than a third of adolescent girls in developing countries are not in the labour force or in school; and, while the gender gap in school enrolment is closing, the gender gap in labour force participation is widening. Barriers persist that keep girls out of school and limit their labour force participation: early marriage, violence, affordability, and safety, to name a few.

The presenters will discuss the barriers that prevent adolescent girls from achieving their potential and some strategies to overcome them. Kate Orkin will discuss her research on parents' aspirations for children's education as drivers of educational investment and Imran Rasul will present his paper on the economic lives of young women during the Ebola epidemic. Rachana Shanbhogue will moderate the discussion and draw out policy and research implications.
