Each year, millions of children die from diseases that could be prevented by current and future vaccines. Through an innovative financing mechanism called Advanced Market Commitments (AMCs), donor governments and foundations are investing in a new market-driven process that seeks to accelerate the development and introduction of appropriate and affordable vaccines in impoverished countries. Starting with a focus on vaccines to prevent pneumonia - one of the largest causes of child deaths around the world - the current efforts on AMCs promise to create markets for vaccines in developing nations comparable to markets in wealthier countries.
