CGD is pleased to announce a screening of Living on One Dollar, the second in our annual summer film series, Global Development Matters.
The film follows four American university students who set out to understand the reality of extreme poverty by living in a rural Guatemalan village on a dollar a day. In the village of Peña Blanca they battle hunger, parasites, and financial stress, but find hope in the lives of the people they meet. After taking out a microloan, a young woman named Rosa is able to start a business, go back to school and ultimately improve her life and that of her family. A young man named Anthony and his neighbors start a savings club that enables their families to purchase big-ticket, life changing items like cleaner burning stoves. And the interaction with a twelve-year-old boy named Chino highlights the value of an education for him and others like him. Since returning to the US, the filmmakers have devoted themselves to telling these stories in a way that will inspire action to confront global poverty.
Following the screening of the film, the filmmakers Zach Ingrasci and Chris Temple will join in the discussion via video link.
