ABOUT THE EVENT
Even prior to COVID-19, full immunization for age was vastly unequal in large middle-income countries like Nigeria. As the COVID-19 crisis deepens, routine immunization has plummeted, and world leaders are seeking ways to regain ground and trust, even while considering how to roll out a COVID-19 vaccine. Join us to discuss one strategy to address both challenges: conditional cash transfers for full and on-time immunization. Working with the state governments of Katsina, Jigawa, and Zamfara in Nigeria, New Incentives tested the conditional cash transfers approach, enrolling over 258,000 infants and their mothers. A recently released evaluation conducted by IDinsight and Hanovia Limited finds New Incentives’ program doubled the percentage of infants who were fully immunized, increasing coverage from roughly a quarter to just over half of all infants. This event will examine the challenges to routine immunization in Nigeria, the New Incentives intervention and its evaluation findings, and how global health funders might think about what comes next in the context of COVID-19 vaccination rollout.
