Eliminating Violence in Schools

SDG4a mandates that every child should be able to learn in a safe and non-violent environment, yet for far too many children around the world school is not a safe place. Evidence suggests that violence in schools—particularly toward girls—is a relatively common phenomenon. Together for Girls (using VAC surveys) estimate that almost one third of girls in Kenya and a quarter of girls in Nigeria experience sexual violence before age 18. School-related gender-based violence is a violation of human rights; a barrier to gender equality; and has serious consequences for health, psychological well-being and educational performance.

This event will examine the challenge of violence in schools and will provide evidence and solutions from the perspective of different organizations working to eliminate it.
