On March 21, 2005 the UN Secretary-General released his blueprint for UN reform, titled In Larger Freedom: Towards Development, Security and Human Rights for All. It offers sweeping recommendations on steps to alleviate global poverty, confront today’s pressing transnational threats, advance human dignity, and improve the performance of UN institutions. The proposals come at an important moment in US-UN relations, when both the Administration and Congress are debating the topic of reform as a means for strengthening the United Nations and the role of the UN in US foreign policy.
On June 1, 2005 CGD hosted a joint event with the United Nations Foundation featuring keynote speaker Mark Malloch Brown, Chef de Cabinet, Office of the UN Secretary General. The event was the first announcement in Washington of the UN Secretary General’s proposals on UN reform. A panel discussion followed the keynote address and included: Timothy Wirth - President, UN Foundation, Nancy Birdsall - President, Center for Global Development, Kim Holmes - Vice President and Director, Davis Institute for International Policy, The Heritage Foundation, Anne-Marie Slaughter - Dean, Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University, and moderator Stewart Patrick, Research Fellow, Center for Global Development.
