ABOUT THE EVENT
While vaccine R&D stands out as a success in the ongoing response to COVID-19, there is still a long way to go to meet vaccination needs, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The public debate offers differing explanations on what the main binding constraints are for reaching more equitable worldwide access. Some argue supply-side issues including manufacturing capacity are the main obstacles to scale up and meet needs; others point to a lack of organized demand for vaccines—the orders or procurement that enable a manufacturing response—rather than insufficient supply.
Join CGD for a discussion on new research on vaccine demand and supply that offers one path to reaching higher vaccination coverage against COVID-19. This event will explore challenges and opportunities around closing global vaccination gaps, examining vaccine need given age structures, available vaccines and COVID-19 dynamics, organized demand and financing for vaccine purchasing, vaccine supply chains and production capacity of manufacturers, and what the international community should do next.
