Costs and Financing of Routine Immunization Programs and New Vaccine Introduction

Featuring
Logan Brenzel
Consultant, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Moderated by
Amanda Glassman
Director of Global Health Policy and Senior Fellow, Center for Global Development

Early estimates suggested that the cost per child fully immunized against tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, and measles was $20 on average. With the introduction of new, more expensive vaccines, there is interest to learn what impact these vaccines have had on the costs of routine immunization programs, as well as to better understand additional delivery costs that might be associated with new vaccine introduction. Logan Brenzel will present the approach and findings from a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation study to examine the costs and financing of routine immunization in Benin, Ghana, Honduras, Moldova, Uganda, and Zambia and discuss the implications of this study on the sustainability of vaccination programs.
