Moving the MCA Message Beyond the Beltway

April 16, 2007

As many of you MCA Monitor followers know, I wish the U.S. government did a better job at getting out across America and communicating why foreign assistance for global development is in the interests of everyday Americans. And, in particular, why the principles underlying the creation of the Millennium Challenge Account should resonate with most citizens, across party lines, who care deeply about the image of the U.S. in the world. So, it was with interest, that I came across an editorial from the Roanoke Times written by Luanne Traud who, despite her feelings about President Bush, recognize the potential of the Millennium Challenge Account that he launched:

"I thought then, and still do, that had Bush allowed the principles of the Millennium Challenge Account to guide his foreign affairs, history would one day recognize him as perceptive and brilliant. This is the one piece of diplomacy that he got right, although it remains obscured by all his colossal blunders. Still, Americans ought to know more about what they are doing right."
