CGD Hosts Address by USAID Administrator Shah Today

January 19, 2011

Marking one year into his tenure as USAID administrator and the 50th anniversary of USAID, Administrator Raj Shah will give a speech today on The Modern Development Enterprise. CGD is honored to sponsor the event.A lot has happened in the last year – the Haitian earthquake, flooding in Pakistan, the release of the President’s Policy Directive (PPD) on Global Development, and the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR).  But, a lot remains to be done. Here are a few items I’d like to hear from Administrator Shah:

  • Outstanding nominations will be announced in next few weeks.  Getting a full team in place is critical.
  • A budget for FY2012 will be sent to Congress in February that fully articulates the objectives for U.S. foreign assistance and the strategies for achieving those objectives.
  • An evaluation plan that will focus on outcomes, AND a plan for phasing out or fixing those programs or approaches that aren’t effective.
You can watch the speech live here. Stay tuned for my post-speech analysis and I look forward to your comments.
