With the post-COVID fiscal crisis restricting health budgets around the world, governments must make difficult decisions of what health services and products are provided, to whom, and at what price. These choices must be evidence-based, transparent, and then implemented. If they are not, resources are likely to be wasted and lives lost.

At the 2014 World Health Assembly, countries came together to pass the historic resolution 67.23, calling for all countries to develop a systematic, evidence-informed approach to setting health priorities. The international Decision Support Initiative (iDSI) was then launched to support countries to build priority-setting institutions. Since its establishment in 2020, Africa CDC Health Economics and Financing Programme, a partner of iDSI, has undertaken activities to promote uptake of EIPS on the African continent.

This high-level panel session will bring together Honourable Ministers of Health and Finance, thought leaders, and members of iDSI to discuss progress on resource optimisation and priority-setting for health in Africa since WHA 2014. This event will highlight how a new regional initiative led by Africa CDC is supporting Member States to improve decision-making in health and identify opportunities for donors and partners to get behind a new Africa-led agenda for better priority-setting in health.
